Salon of the Month

As well as starting a new weekly restaurant post, I will also be doing a monthly post on a salon within the Birmingham City Centre area. It could be a hair or beauty salon or even both.

I was inspired by an old post I had done and by various questions about the salons in Birmingham, that I decided this was overdue.

So this time the spotlight is on hair and beauty salon, B in the City.

Located near the law courts, opposite the old Argos, is this quaint place.

I was invited along to try out both the hair and beauty sides of the salon. I remember going past this salon, when I used to go the college nearby but never venturing inside, I am not sure why but I kinda regret that now.

1st floor - Hair area, reception and waiting area
2nd Floor - Hair dye section
2nd Floor - Extra basins also situated here, I was told these are barely used.
2nd Floor - Extra styling chairs & mirrors
2nd Floor - Tanning booth
The salon has three floors but it seems only the 1st and 3rd are used, whereas the 2nd is barely used at all.

On the 3rd floor is where the beauty section is located, there are two small rooms within the big room, shown above. This big room can be used for group beauty parties and is big enough for a vast celebration.

2nd massaging room
I was able to get a taster facial at the salon by Yasmin, who is the head of the beauty department. She is based on the 3rd floor of the salon, in the room pictured in the images above and below. Its a good size room and has everything a beauty therapist could want. Waxing section, products for facials, a massage table and a nail station. It was well laid out but I felt as if the nail section should be outside because the room is perfect and private for a massage but for a manicure, it seemed a tad claustrophobic. I was greeted by Yasmin as I arrived and she led me to the beauty room. She was super friendly and so easy to get with. For the facial, she used Elemis products and it felt so luxurious and relaxing. I even got a well needed hand massage, whilst my facial was infusing into my skin.

To be honest, I didn't really feel a difference in my skin and probably wouldn't go for it again because it felt as if I could do it at home. But this could be that it was only a taster facial and I probably should've gone an intensive one. However, Yasmin is very good at what she does and her service makes me want to go back for a massage or a shellac manicure.

Now onto the hair section.

My hair was cut by a lovely lady called Heather, who talked me through what I wanted and washed my hair, as well as cutting it. This is so rare that your stylist washes your hair, that it felt a tad weird but it meant I was able to chat to Heather a little more and bond better. Which I find is important when getting to know a new hairdresser, so I was kinda wishing that this happened at every salon.

Before

After
As you can see, it was only a little trim but my layers look so much more pronounced, my hair is a lot more manageable and the condition is so much better. I have thick long hair, that has been hacked into, in the past, but Heather knew what she was doing and took off only what was necessary. Whilst talking to Heather, I learnt she used to work for Umberto Giannini and you can tell this by the quality of the blow dry. It was voluptuous, gorgeous and lasted me 4 days! Heather was a delight to have my hair done by, chatty but knows what she is talking about.

Overall, I really enjoyed my visit to B in the City and felt like quite the pampered princess. There are some very talented people working here, I cannot fault their customer service or talent but the look of the place seems to let it down a tad. It seems a little out of place within town and would be more fitting within the outskirts of Birmingham. The salon is slightly lower priced compared to other salons within the centre and it is definitely value for money. I think I am used to young and fresh salons so this felt like a step down but the service brings this value up. I think I would go back for a blow dry by Heather or a Shellac manicure by Yasmin but for my hair cut, I am sticking to my salon.

Ambiance - 2/5
Cleanliness - 5/5
Staff - 5/5
Value - 4/5

Quick thank you to Josie, Heather and Yasmin for the pampering, you ladies were gems.

xx
