Vegan Marshmallows

There are certain things that you think you are never going to have again once you go vegan. One of which is marshmallows. So when Freedom Mallows got in touch, I was intrigued to see what the marshmallows would taste like. Would they be soft? Would they taste like marshmallows or plastic?

The marshmallows are egg and dairy-free, gluten and gelantine free, contain no artificial flavourings or colourings, as well as no soy or GMO, are vegetarian and vegan and nut and tree nut free.

Prior to the folks at Freedom Mallows sending me over the packets, I tried a packet of the mini marshmallows and enjoyed them in a rocky road recipe. I got them from Holland and Barrett and each packet is around £2.50. But this time around, I also tried the fat version of marshmallows and found them to be sweet but perfectly so and the two flavours of vanilla and strawberry to be distinctive.

The big size marshmallows, or the fat version as I mentioned previously, are perfect for putting on the barbeque or for making into smores. Most likely from the fact that they contain carrageenan. They become creamy and melted well.

As well as being ace for melting, I also added all three packets into a batch of rocky road, from a recipe I took from Lucy Watson's cooking book. I have only put the mini marshmallows in this recipe before but it worked really well to put the big marshmallows into the recipe. It created a lovely depth of flavour, without becoming too dense or chewy.

Overall, I would highly recommend this brand of vegan marshmallows. The packets contain a good amount of the marshmallows, are a reasonable price, melt well, work well by themselves and in recipes.

Have you tried them? What did you think?
