All of a sudden, it seems as if Birmingham has been struck by lots of new eateries. One of which is Revolution de Cuba on Temple St. The eatery has a very warm party vibe that is cosy but loud. I am such an old women when it comes to music. I like places where I dine to have the music somewhat low, so I can talk to my dining partner. Is that just me? So, what are the vegan options like at Revolution de Cuba?
Whilst we were waiting to order, they gave us fried tortilla chips and they were glorious. Crunchy, spicy and just lovely. I was imagining them with vegan chilli and cheese on top, like nachos. Yum! Needless to say they didn't take long to disappear.
So the menu has a vegetarian section but there is no vegan label on them, so you have two options: you can ask your waiter about any of the veggie options you're interested in and whether they can be altered to be vegan or are vegan already or you can consult the online menu that you can filter by vegan options. Since I had been invited to go try out the eatery, I had already been given a quick snapshot on the vegan options. There are two to be exact, the Tofu Tacos and Tofu Sunshine.
I went for the Tofu Tacos for my starter and it was ok. I found that the tofu was a tad soggy and the overall tofu was a little lacklustre. It need more veg, more spice, better tofu, basically it just needed more. Not a fan.
The service was very slow on the Wednesday we visited and the drinks arrived after our starter. We went for a Virgin Zombie Slayer and a Blackberry Colada. Both were alcohol free and nice, as well as presented very well.
My mum had the Aubergine Gratin for her starter and the Grilled Red Fish with Creole Sweetcorn. She enjoyed them all and they were all presented really well. There are some great vegetarian and fish options on the menu. But now, back to the vegan options.
For my main, I went for the Mushroom, Bean and Spinach Burrito that had the sour cream and cheese omitted to be vegan. I liked it was served with the tortilla chips. But as I started to eat the burrito I found that there was mostly only white rice in it. I told our server, who very nicely switched it for me and apologised.
I switched it for the Tofu Sunshine Bowl and I am so glad I did. It was awesome and contained pan fried tofu, spinach, smashed avocado, asparagus, charred red peppers, courgette, pineapple, sweetcorn salsa, red chard and carrot. I liked all the different textures, tastes and flavours within the dish. I couldn't fault it and I think it was a blessing in disguise that I was able to switch my dish and I would likely recommend this.
Overall, I have mixed feelings about Revolution de Cuba. I loved my main and the look and feel of the place but that's it. I didn't enjoy my starter, there are a very limited amount of vegan options on the menu, both of which I have now tried, and my server appeared to know very little about the vegan options. However, the manager was friendly and very easily made the experience better for me.
**FYI, I was invited to try out the vegan options at Revolution de Cuba and the meal was complimentary because of that**
Would I go back? Maybe, if a friend wanted to try it out
How did they cope with the vegan dietary requirement? They have vegan options but they aren't many
What are the prices like? For the portion sizes, the prices are reasonable. For the 2 starters, 2 mains, 2 mocktails and 1 side, it would've been around £45.
What is eatery best for? A pre-drink with nibbles
Have you been? What did you think?
