Zen Metro

I love Thai Food. I love the depth of flavours, the way they use tofu and how they deep fry vegetables. So after going to the launch party of Zen Metro a couple months ago, I was wondering how the restaurant would fare. Then I received an invite to try out the restaurant and I did not have to wonder anymore!

Zen Metro is located at the back of Birmingham Snow Hill station, on Cornwall Street. As you walk in, there is a bar and as you continue to walk, there is the dining area. The best thing about the dining are is the stunning blossom tree. Anyways, onto the food.

As we decided what to have from the menu, we were served the Asian version of the poppadom, prawn crackers. They were tasty, slightly spicy and served with a choice of sauces. A great start to the meal!

For my starters, I chose the Tempura Vegetables, which was served with a sriracha and sweet chilli sauce. This was perfection! The vegetable were perfectly done, not hard or mushy and the batter was also the perfect consistency. I wish the batter was a little spicy but the spice was added from the sauce, which was also delicious. An A minus from me, as it just wasn't as good as what I had from Rofuto

For my mains, I picked two - one seafood dish and one vegan dish. I chose the Veg Massaman curry for the vegan option. I loved the addition of potatoes and the other vegetables that were used in the curry. The richness of the coconut milk made this dish melt in my mouth. I chose to have jasmine rice with this, which was sticky but lovely with the curry. I also liked the way it was served in the slate-like dishes.

For the next main, I chose to go for the Tiger Prawns in a Yellow Curry. Again, it was a stunning dish, made to perfection. The sauce was creamy, slightly spicy yet sour and again, there was potatoes. Simple yet done very well.

I couldn't leave without having dessert, especially as I saw there was Fried Banana on the menu. Crunchy on the outside and soft and full of flavour on the inside. Lovely!

Overall, I loved my experience at Zen Metro and every course was well presented and full of flavour yet distinctive. I couldn't finish both of the mains, so I had leftovers to take with me, which tasted even better the next day!

Would I go back? Yes

Why? A great selection of seafood and vegan dishes, that are made well and all have their own distinctive flavour.

How was the service? Attentive, friendly and knowledgeable.

How did they cope with the dairy-free dietary requirement? Easily and the waiter was able to let me know what was suitable, as it is not specified on the menu.

What are the prices like? Around £9 for the mains and around £6 for the starters. I found this to be reasonable for the portions, quality of the food and the produce that was used.
