I have heard a lot, within the Brummie blogosphere, about The Church in Jewellery Quarter.
So when I had a chance to set up a meet-up with some lovely fellow bloggers, I took it as an opportunity to finally try this place out. I didn't know what to expect as I arrived into the venue, it was quite small and I can imagine it can become quite cramped. It is your typical pub but with a difference. As my blogger friends arrived, we were told that it was Meat Free Monday and that meant that it was half-price on veggie and vegan main meals, as you can imagine, this made me ridiculously happy like someone just gave me a hamper full of Charlotte Tilbury goodies.
Anyways… onto the food.
For my main(shown above), I took advantage of the Meat Free Monday offer and had the Pulled Jackfruit and Kale with Rice. I haven't tried jackfruit before but I was surprised at how much it looked like pulled chicken. I loved the taste too, the jackfruit is quite sweet but works well with the strong texture and stickiness of the barbecue sauce, as well as with the bitterness of the kale. I felt the rice let it down slightly because it was very basic and nothing special but I would still have this again. It would be awesome with a jacket potato or even as a filling within a roasted sweet potato; this is why I need to make this as I have already planned the accompaniments in my head.
For my dessert, I went for the Peaches and Cream *cue me singing the Snoop Dogg track, as well as the 112 track (if you know, you know)*. I checked the menu before I went to the dinner and was surprised at how there was a vegan option for dessert, that also did not contain sorbet. I literally wanted to praise Jesus but thought better of it and waited to try it out, regardless of how full I would be. The dessert did not disappoint, it had depth, the ice cream was beautiful and I loved the crumble too I just wished there had been a thicker layer of the crumble. That is just a personal preference because I have a huge love of the crumble topping, especially when it contains nuts.
Overall, I was really happy with my first visit to The Church and I envy those that live close to it, especially when I see the Peel and Stone Weekend Brunches held in the Back Room, and I look forward to going back soon.
Food - 5/5
The ingredients that were used were innovative and trendy yet tasty and well thought through; also served well.
Dairy-free options? - 5/5
There were a good array of options for dairy-free, vegetarian and vegans, that were different from the usual. Also they were labelled clearly on the menu, which always makes life easier.
Service - 5/5
We were served by the Bar Manager, Aman, who was attentive and knowledgeable about the cocktails and the food that was being served.
Cleanliness - 5/5
The venue reminded me of my SU at uni, as it was cosy and low rent but yet clean.
Location - 4/5
A little out of Birmingham City Centre but easy to get to from the JQ train station and definitely worth the slightly extra effort.
Value for Money - 5/5
It was around 10 pounds for my main and dessert, which considering the quality of the ingredients and the dishes themselves, it was more then worth it.
Worth trying? Most definitely the place to try right now.
Instagram worthy? Yes!
Do you agree with my review? What would you add?
*I was not paid to do this review, I paid for my dinner and I would pay again*
