Hello and welcome back to another vegan review from the perspective of Birmingham-based vegan foodie, Tofu Tasha. Today, she will be focusing on the new eatery Wing Wah in Birmingham's Chinatown. Enough of talking in third person to you guys and onto the review.
Wing Wah used to be situated in the Wing Yip Centre for over 20 years but they moved last year to Chinatown, opposite what used to be Big Wok. I've never heard of this place but it's already seems to have an impressive following and steady stream of business. As well as the main dining area, there are also private dining rooms, that all have themes and a chance to enjoy karaoke. Now onto the food!
They served up a few starters to begin with, such as these Rice Summer Rolls served with peanut sauce and sweet chilli. This was tasty and fresh, with very thin strips of veggies. I like how they were parcel size but so messy to eat.
Another of the starters was the Durian Puffs, which is a pastry like roll filled with durian, a smelly fruit that is in the same family as the jackfruit. This was really tasty with a very creamy filling and a pastry of layers on the outside.
Still on starters, yep we were spoiled! This is the Fried Dough Balls. This was a weird but interesting one. It's was a fried dough ball that was encased in a slimy-like layer. I know I haven't described that very well but it was actually really nice.
Now after those awesome starters, it was onto the mains. Which were all served with this Spinach Rice. Tasty, earthy and lovely with everything.
The highlight of the meal was the Crispy Aubergine. I love aubergine and was told they serve an awesome aubergine dish, something that the owner of Wing Yip loves and I can see why. It was sticky, crispy, soft on the inside and cut into strips with a hint of chilli. Sooooooo good!
I love the way that veggies are served in Chinese/Japanese restaurants and this Garlic Broccoli was so different. This dish I would happily have again. Broccoli is a favourite of mine anyway and the flavour from the garlic went so well with it.
Last of the mains was this Vegetarian Sichuan Mapo Tofu. This was soft tofu served in a sauce that was packed with flavour and a little hint. I enjoyed this one too. I loved the chilli, chunks of tofu and how easy it was to eat. I would also have this one again.
Last but not least was dessert, which was a fruit platter. I'm not a fan of fruit or sorbet as a dessert but this was executed really well and had contained mango, watermelon, orange, grapes, apple, pineapple and strawberries. Super yummy!
**The views in this blog are my own but the meal was complimentary**
Would I go back? Yes, when I am in the mood for some crispy aubergine
How did they cope with the vegan dietary requirement? The normal menu wasn't given, so I'm not sure if the vegan items are listed clearly. But the waiters has a vast knowledge of the dishes so I wouldn't hesitate to visit again, especially as the options were so good
What are the prices like? This meal was complimentary and I didn't see the usual menu so I don't know what the price range is or what the portions would normally be like.
What is eatery best for? Vegan options with bite for dinner or lunch
Hope you enjoyed this review. Let me know if you're been and what you thought
